On February 15th Steven McElroy wrote an article about the remake of the classic horror film FRIDAY THE 13th. “It slashed its way to No. 1, earning $42.5 million in its first weekend in theaters, more than double the total of the No. 2 movie HE’S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU,” wrote McElroy.

I beg to differ.

I watched Friday the 13th on Saturday, and at the end of the film I was quite disappointed.

The film started off with a bang; within the first few minutes four people are violently killed by Jason Voorhees (the villain), and one person is captured. Then the title card pops up revealing the words FRIDAY THE 13th and the audience I was with as well as myself sighed in relief that the movie wasn’t over.

Unfortunately, I had not realized at the time that the movie would go on to be about drugs, sex, and bloody deaths with a splash of cheap thrills and bangs to make the audience jump.

In the end I left the theatre feeling a sense of loss, but I was thankful that my boyfriend paid for my ticket, or I would have felt cheated out of a precious ten dollars.

The Internet Movie Data-Base gave FRIDAY THE 13th 6.9 out of ten stars, which I feel was more than generous.

Rotten-tomatoes (another website dedicated to rating movies) gave the film a 29% fresh rating on a scale that goes to 100% fresh.

"This is certainly not the movie to propel the slasher genre forward," wrote USA TODAY’S Claudia Puig.

Hollywood needs to revamp its horror section and they should do so without remaking old horror films; regardless of whether or not they’re American horror films (like AMITYVILLE HORROR), or foreign horror films (THE RING and ONE MISSED CALL).

The last good horror film I watched was entitled EDEN LAKE, and I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a horror defined in a different way.

  1. That is so bizzare that, that movie did so well. I feel how many movie have they released already that were basically identical to that one? Wasnt have Jason 3,095,746? I mean were are supposed to be an innovative and modern country. I would think they would be able to come up with something that hasnt already been done yet. I don't like scary movie though. Never have!

  2. Aw man you told me about the movie already now I don't even want to see it anymore!

You are right, how many times can you change up the story line of the same story besides just different killing scenes.

It received so much publicity simply because it came out on Friday the 13th which is thought to be one of the scariest days of year.

  3. Well, working at a movie theater, I noticed a lot of buzz for this movie. We had a midnight showing for it, and it filled one of our 455 seat theaters.

I had always been a fan of the horror genre, at least growing up, but I had a hard time pulling anything good out of this movie. It resembled the older versions too much. At least with the technology and digital effects, you would think they could incorporate it more.

I left the theater lost for words. I was very disappointed and only hope there is still a chance for this genre in the future.

  4. I honestly have no intention of ever seeing the remake or the original. Scary movies aren't exactly my favorite so i generally stay away unless the plot is out of the ordinary. I agree with Christina. I was not impressed when i saw Amittyville Horror. Honestly, the only reason why i wanted to see it was because of Ryan Reynolds (i love him)and even with him half naked it was hard to watch. I'm sure directors and producers are running dry with ideas but it is definitly time to try a new angle. The last scary movie i saw was Stanger. It was about a young couple who spends a weekend at a distant and isolated cabin only to find themselves harrased by a mask-wearing family who torchers them, then kills them by simply stabbing them in the stomach. Talk about a dissappointment. I am easily startled and i didn't even budge. I prefer documentaries over horror movies any day.

  5. I was very excited ever since December to see this movie. But thirty minutes into the movie, I already knew that I was gonna be disappointed. I would have liked it more if they would have gave more information about Jason. The main thing that I didn't like was that they made it seem as if Jason was a human, when in the past movies, he has always been a zombie or some type of monster. I wasn't surprised by the sex and drugs at all, they always include these things whether it's a Jason or Nightmare on Elm Street movie.

  6. I was one of the people that saw the movie at midnight on Friday the 13th and I was very excited to see it. It wasn't really as scary as I thought it was going to be but it was very suspenseful. I am glad they are trying to bring it back. They are many horror remakes such as Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Prom Night, Halloween, Amityville Horror, My Bloody Valentine, and many more. The reasons for the remakes is to make the movie better, not have such cheesy killings, better acting and better special effects. Personally, I really enjoyed the suspense and was glad to have seen the movie.
